How WARIORS Works for Tribal Development in Assam
Women Awareness and Rural Invigorate Organization cum Radiant Society (www.wariors.org) is a leading NGO in Assam working for tribal development. Our Head Office is at Biswanath Chariali (Reg. No: RS/BCH/268/05 of 2021-2022, NGO Darpan: AS/2021/0299586, CSR: CSR00055924).Biswanath district is a tribal dominated district. Here Karbi, Garo, Munda, Adivasi and other tribal communities live in remote villages like Pathaijan, Manjircho, Karbi Block, Bihmari and Shialmari. Most tribal women are expert in traditional weaving but have no market linkage, no education about government schemes and no income source. WARIORS is working to make them self-reliant.We work through our District Committee and Regional Committees – Manjircho Regional Committee, Karbi Block Regional Committee and Shialmari Regional Committee. Our work for tribal development has 4 pillars – Skill Training, Cultural Preservation, Awareness and SHG Formation.1. SKILL TRAINING FOR TRIBAL WOMEN – SELF-RELIANCEOur main objective is to make tribal women and adolescent girls self-reliant through skill training.A. Karbi Traditional Weaving Training – Loin Loom Training at Pathaijan:
Karbi women use loin loom (kokal bondha taal) to make traditional dress. But young girls are forgetting this skill. Considering this, our Manjircho Regional Committee organized a 15-day free Karbi Weaving Training at Pathaijan on 05/08/2025 under the supervision of President Smt. Aity Timungpi. In this training, we taught how to make Pini, Pekok, Khim and Seleng. Despite adverse weather, girls participated regularly. This training was the first program of our newly formed Manjircho Regional Committee and it was successfully concluded. Now these girls can make their own traditional dress and also sell in market. One Pini set sells for Rs. 2000-3000.

Cutting and Sewing Training at Pathaijan:
On 10/08/2025, Manjircho Regional Committee organized a 10-day free Cutting and Sewing Training at Pathaijan. The objective was to make women and adolescent girls self-reliant through cutting and sewing.Trainer Smt. Binita Kropi taught Blouse, Petticoat, Salwar and School Uniform cutting and stitching. Many tribal girls participated. After training they can earn Rs. 3000-5000 per month from home by stitching. This training was highly appreciated by local community.C. Karbi Bag “Jarang” Making Training – Karbi Block:
Jarang is a traditional Karbi bag made from handwoven fabric. It is eco-friendly, strong and daily usable. It has high demand in market as alternative to plastic.

On 21/08/2024, Karbi Block Regional Committee organized a one-day Jarang making training. Many women participated and successfully learned to make Jarang. Earlier they did not know how to make it for commercial purpose. Now they make Jarang and sell at Rs. 300-500 per bag in Biswanath and Tezpur market. This training also helps in preserving traditional craft and provides income.2. CULTURAL PRESERVATION WITH LIVELIHOODWe believe tribal development is not possible without preserving tribal culture. Our skill trainings are not only for income but also for cultural preservation. When we teach Karbi weaving, Jarang making, Singpho shawl making, we are preserving their heritage. Young generation is learning from elders. This gives them pride in their own culture. One girl who learns Karbi weaving can earn Rs. 4000-7000 per month and also keep her culture alive.3. AWARENESS MEETING ON WOMEN EMPOWERMENT AND SOCIAL ISSUESIn many tribal villages, women are still behind due to lack of education, superstition, child marriage and lack of awareness about government schemes.Awareness Meeting at Karbi Block Rang Mancha – 10/08/2025:
Karbi Block Regional Committee organized an Awareness Meeting on Women Empowerment at Karbi Block Rang Mancha. Resource Person Smt. Anjali Kramchapi explained about women rights, importance of education, government schemes like Lakhpati Didi, SHG loan, sewing machine scheme and health awareness. Tribal women came to know about their rights for the first time.B. Awareness Meeting at Bihmari – Shialmari Regional Committee – 10/02/2025:
Shialmari Regional Committee organized an awareness meeting at Bihmari area among Karbi community who are educationally backward. The topics were – Women Education, Removal of Superstition, Prevention of Child Marriage and Women Empowerment. We invited Smt. Punyaprabha Saikia, Internal Mentor of Bihali Development Block as resource person. She explained in simple language how to make a superstition-free strong society, how to become self-reliant and what government facilities are available. Women asked many questions and she cleared all doubts. Secretary Smt. Kiran Tispi concluded the meeting with a plan to organize another such meeting for the whole area.

These awareness meetings are very important because skill training alone is not enough. Women need to be aware about why they should be self-reliant, why child marriage should be stopped and why education is important.4. SHG FORMATION AND FINANCIAL LINKAGEAfter training and awareness, we form Self Help Groups (SHGs) of tribal women. In Biswanath district, we have formed many SHGs in Karbi Block and Manjircho area. Each SHG has 10-12 members who save Rs. 100 per month. They have bank accounts. We link them with Assam Gramin Vikash Bank and help them to get loans under government schemes. Our Impact in Tribal Development:More than 100 tribal women and girls trained in Karbi weaving, cutting-sewing and Jarang making in Biswanath district15-day Karbi weaving and 10-day tailoring training successfully completed at PathaijanTraditional craft like Jarang bag is now a source of incomeMore than 50 tribal women made aware about women empowerment, child marriage prevention and government schemesNewly formed regional committees like Manjircho and Karbi Block are actively working at grassroots level.

Our Future Plan:We plan to set up a Permanent Tribal Skill Development Centre at Biswanath Chariali covering Karbi Block, Manjircho, Shialmari and Bihmari for 200 tribal women per year. The centre will have loin looms, sewing machines and Jarang making unit with residential facility for girls from remote villages. Budget needed Rs. 10 Lakhs per year. We seek CSR support from companies.WARIORS believes – If a tribal woman gets one skill, her whole family becomes self-reliant. Our work is not just training, it is preserving culture, removing superstition and building a self-reliant tribal society.Contact for Tribal Development Programs:
